VA Student Certification Checklist

The information below will provide you with information related to Veteran education benefits.

You can get benefits through MGIB-AD if you served at least 2 years on active duty, and you:

  • Were honorably discharged,and
  • Have a high school diploma, GED, or 12 hours of college credit, and
  • Meet other requirements

Before your initial visit:

  • Apply to the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs for your to receive your Certificate of Eligibility.
  • Used your VA education benefits before? Complete the through VA.gov under the “Find your education benefits form” tab.
  • Request Transcripts: Official military, college, and high school transcripts must be sent directly to Âé¶¹ÊÓÆµ from each institution.

You can request military transcripts at:

  • Army, Coast Guard, Marine Corps, and Navy Transcripts:
  • Community College of the Air Force (CCAF) Transcripts:

For your initial visit:

Complete and submit the following documents to Military and Veterans Programs:

  • VA Resident Tuition Waiver

Verify Your Enrollment:

Chapter 30 students must verify their enrollment at the end of each month to receive their monthly stipend. You may call 877-823-2378 or submit an online verification.

 

Service members expecting a discharge that is other than dishonorable who possess a VA memorandum or Integrated Disability Evaluation System (IDES) rating of 20 percent or more—as well as Service members currently going through a Physical Evaluation Board—may be eligible to receive VR&E services. Ask your VR&E Counselor to submit your VR&E VA Authorization (formerly known as VA Form 28-1905) to the NMSU Carlsbad VA School Certifying Official.

Request Transcripts

Official military, college, and high school transcripts must be sent directly to SEMNC from each institution.

You may be able to get benefits through the Post-9/11 GI Bill® if you:

  • Qualify for any GI Bill® program, and
  • Have served on active duty for at least 90 days, whether continuous (all at once) or interrupted (for shorter periods over time), after September 10, 2001

You may be able to transfer all 36 months or a portion of your Post-9/11 GI Bill® benefits to a spouse or child. The Department of Defense approves a .

Verify your enrollment:

As of August 1, 2021, Chapter 33 students must verify their enrollment status each month to continue receiving their monthly housing allowance (MHA) and/or kicker payments. Students can verify their enrollment status in one of two ways:

  • Text Messaging– Students who choose VA’s “Opt-In” feature will receive a text message each month prompting them to verify their enrollment status.
  • Telephone– Students may call the Education Call Center (ECC) at 888-442-4551 to verify their enrollment status

You may qualify for education benefits if you’re the child or spouse of a Veteran who:

  • Is permanently and totally disabled due to a service-connected disability, or
  • Died while on active duty or as a result of a service-connected disability

You can get benefits through MGIB-SR if you’re a member of the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps or Coast Guard Reserves, Army National Guard, or Air National Guard, and you:

  • Have either a 6-year service obligation (you agreed to serve 6 years) in the Selected Service, or
  • Are an officer in the Selected Reserve who agreed to serve 6 years in addition to your initial service obligation, and
  • Meet other requirements
